Hawa Feminist Coalition Marks International Day of the Girl 2025 in Garowe

On October 11, 2025, Hawa Feminist Coalition proudly joined the global commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child, hosting a vibrant and inspiring event at our conference hall in Garowe, Puntland, Somalia. The gathering brought together 25 young feminist activists and girls — each with powerful stories, dreams, and visions for a more equal and inclusive Somalia. The event created a safe and supportive space where girls could freely express themselves, share personal experiences, discuss challenges, and imagine bold solutions to the barriers facing young women and girls across the country.

The International Day of the Girl Child, observed globally on October 11, celebrates girls’ rights and highlights the challenges they face. It is a day to recognize their potential, amplify their leadership, and advocate for a world where girls are free to reach their full potential.

A Safe Space for Voices and Dreams

Through open dialogue, storytelling, and creative reflection, participants spoke about issues such as education access, gender-based violence, early marriage, digital safety, and the lack of representation of young women in decision-making.

Each story shared was a testament to courage and resilience — reminding everyone present that when girls are empowered to speak up, they can transform not only their own lives but also their communities.

To nurture their creativity, participants also took part in a “Draw Your Dream” activity, where they illustrated their hopes for a future where every girl can thrive without fear or discrimination. The colorful drawings and words filled the room with hope, strength, and determination.

Recognizing Courage and Leadership

In a moment of joy and solidarity, the most outspoken and inspiring girls were recognized and celebrated with special gifts as a token of appreciation for their courage and leadership.

This gesture not only encouraged participants to continue raising their voices but also reinforced the message that every girl’s voice matters — and that leadership begins with the confidence to speak up.

A Collective Call for Change

The commemoration was more than an event; it was a call to action — a reminder that feminist organizing begins with empowering girls to imagine and create the futures they deserve.

As one participant shared: “This space gave me confidence to speak about things I’ve never said before. I now know that my voice has power.”

Through initiatives like this, Hawa Feminist Coalition continues to build spaces where girls and young women can learn, lead, and thrive — amplifying feminist voices and advancing gender equality in Somalia.
